Who doesn’t love the sea? The colors and cool aspect of nautical styles are perennial favorites, and cannot fail to refresh a tired room or outdoor area.
From small details to extensive renovation, three very different projects draw on the inspiration of the ocean and sea-side to refresh tired furniture and renovate spaces:
A coastal-style patio in the mountains near Reno Nevada,
A Basement Playroom in a nautical theme,
a three season room re-imagined as a New England lobster hideaway,
and the use of small nautical details throughout a house...
all illustrate the boundless attraction of the coast and the sea.
Coastal Style Patio
Rich stripes and prints on antique garden furniture give this mountain patio near a running stream a gracious European aspect that perfectly suits the well-traveled client.
The blue and white pinstripe, outdoor fabric on the black iron outdoor furniture has a classic and sophisticated appeal, and welcomes the clients and their guests to an outdoor lunch.
An antique bench comes alive with a wide stripe, Ralph Lauren outdoor fabric for seat cushion and pillows. The deep blues set off the warm colors of the distressed metal, and complement the bright green shrubbery.
A fresh, fun polka dot fabric provides a playful foil to a white enameled, vintage patio chair.
Nautical Basement
A colorful collage of textured wovens and cotton prints upholstered on designer furniture, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere in an open and airy brick loft.
Blue and white stripes mixed with Clipper ship painting and sculpture spice up a drab landing.
An antique captain’s wheel, a sailboat pillow trimmed in yachting cord, and a braided rug in seaside colors bring a sea-faring feel to this basement playroom.
Antique English oil painting of an ocean continues the nautical-inspired Basement.

This cozy vignette reflects “a Paris bistro meets Portland, Maine style” through festive stripe seat cushions on the black café side chairs and a preppy, hooked, lobster rug to go in front of the antique French marble bistro table.
Nautical Accents
It doesn’t take much to summon the sound of the ocean and a refreshing sense of the sea-side. Just a few details, thoughtfully placed without too many other things to distract, and a small space can feel like a vacation.
Antique pharmacy glasses filled with shells and sea glass along with a vintage teapot add a nautical touch to a fireplace mantle.
An antique lobster buoy shows off its age and beauty when it is made into a lamp.
